8 Worst Foods for Your Teeth

Everything in moderation. Remember mom telling you that? Or how about, “If you keep eating all that candy, your teeth will fall out.” Mom might have exaggerated just a bit there, but put the two thoughts together and you might have a legitimate rule when it comes to healthy teeth and gums. We will list the worst foods for your teeth in no particular order, but keep track of how many of them you eat regularly.

Hard and Chewy Candy

Worst Foods For Your Teeth - CandyThis might actually be the worst of both worlds. Hard candy of course is full of sugar, but it also can create an issue if you bite down on it too hard or at the wrong angle. It can result in a chipped or broken tooth and an emergency trip to the dentist.

Now on to the sugary part. Caramels, taffy, hard candies of all types not only have lots of sugar but many also contain citric acid. The bacteria in your mouth just love the sugar and citric acid creating cavities and loss of enamel. The chewy type sticks to your teeth longer making it even harder to remove.

If you must indulge, think back to what mom said about moderation, and then rinse with water and floss right away.

Soda and Sports Drinks

You may think that sports and energy drinks are a better choice than soda, but always check the label to note if sugar is the first ingredient listed. Many times we are fooled by what is promoted as healthy. Sports and energy drinks are a good example of something touted as healthy, but can contain copious amounts of sugar. The sugar in these drinks leads to plaque then to acid that attacks your enamel.

Carbonated soda, even diet drinks contain citric acid and phosphoric acid, which can harm teeth even more than the sugar. So back to the old moderation mantra. Another alternative is to only indulge while eating, or simply switch to plain old water.

Wine

Red wine is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to staining your teeth. Like tea, it contains tannins making your teeth sticky which promote stains. Sorry to tell those Pinot Grigio fans or Chardonnay drinkers, but even white wine can damage your teeth. It also contain acids which can encourage other foods to stain your teeth. No matter what kind of alcohol you drink, it will dry out your mouth leading to tooth decay and even oral infections.

Citrus Fruits and Juices

Yes, we know that we have always been told to drink orange juice for our Vitamin C. Again, too much of a good thing can be detrimental. The acid in oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit erodes tooth enamel. Add the sugar, and you have a dangerous combination. Have your OJ with breakfast, and then clean your teeth.

Sticky Foods like Dried Fruits

Although we can think of dried fruits as a healthy snack, they stick to our teeth longer than other foods making them difficult to remove. Eat your trail mix, but keep water nearby and brush and floss as soon as possible.

Ice

This may sound crazy. We love our icy drinks, but many of us like to crunch and chew the ice. That is a real no-no. Yes, ice just contains healthy water, but we can damage teeth, break crowns, or dislodge old fillings. So cut that out!!!!

Processed Carbs

Coffee and Tea

We all love our cup of Joe in the morning or our afternoon tea to give us a jolt. Unfortunately the caffeine dries out our mouth inviting bacteria, and stains our teeth. Think of those ugly stains on your mug.
