Invisalign: An Alternative to Braces

If you’ve been considering orthodontic treatment for a straighter smile, Invisalign is certainly something to consider. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign is barely noticeable, and can achieve essentially the same results.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign works by shifting your teeth through the use of clear plastic aligning trays, custom fit for your mouth. If you’ve ever played contact sports, an Invisalign aligner is almost like a very thin mouth guard. Every few weeks you will swap out your existing aligner for a new one, until the desired correction is achieved. We will monitor your progress at regular intervals throughout your treatment to ensure that everything is progressing along as planned.

The amount of time required for you to reach your desired smile will vary depending on the severity of your misalignment. Other personal factors like bone structure can also play a role. That said, on average Invisalign patients will reach their desired correction in just 18 months!

Who is Invisalign for?

Invisalign is suitable for any patient who is looking to straighten their teeth. However, it is typically preferred by adults who may have not had braces previously, or by patients who did have braces, but have since experienced a shift in their dental structure.

Comfort is key

One of the main problems with traditional metal braces is that at times, they can be uncomfortable. Also, they are visible and they trap food, which can be unsightly and makes it harder to clean your teeth.

Since Invisalign is made from polished clear plastic, it simply feels like an extension of your teeth. It will feel quite smooth against your gums and cheeks, allowing you to achieve your realignment much more comfortably. Also, you do not wear it while eating and cleaning your teeth.

Will there be any restrictions to my day to day life?

Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign is typically easier to maintain, and you will not be restricted from eating certain foods. It is completely removable, allowing you to eat many of the foods braces wearers cannot, like popcorn, hard candy, and chewing gum. However, it is important that you remove your aligners before consuming any food, and drinking any sugary or acidic beverages. Certain beverages can stain your aligners, which will not impair their functionality, but can contribute to cavities, and other negative factors. For the best result, we recommend that patients only consumer water while their aligners are in place.

Your aligners should be worn for at least 20-22 hours per day, so in order to stay on schedule, it’s crucial that you only remove your aligners for meals and snacks, and cleaning.
