Teeth Whitening

After years of drinking coffee, wine, soda and eating foods that can stain your teeth, you may notice that your smile is beginning to look dull. Not to worry! We offer teeth whitening treatments to all of our patients. When your teeth are clean and white, you look good, and feel even better.

Whitening your teeth may seem like a complicated process, however, it’s actually quite simple. In just a few simple steps, you will notice a difference in the way your teeth look, and the way you feel about your appearance.

How Whiteners Work

Whitening products use safe bleaching chemicals to reach down into the enamel of the tooth. Simply put, this reaction breaks apart compounds that stain the teeth over time. Since tooth enamel is porous, the bleaching chemicals can work their way into the teeth, ensuring your new found whiteness isn’t removed with regular brushing and care.

Two Options for Teeth Whitening

Tooth whitening can be done at home or in our office, and many patients will take advantage of both treatments to increase results.

  • In-Office Whitening: A protective barrier is secured over the gums, and hydrogen peroxide is placed on the teeth for several minutes. The resulting paste is then removed, and the procedure may be repeated several times. You may notice anywhere from 4-6 shades of whitening during a single half hour treatment period.
  • At-Home Whitening: At home whitening systems typically use carbamide peroxide combined with other materials to whiten teeth. Before your at-home procedure, impressions of your teeth are taken at our office to make custom trays that fit your teeth securely. Once your custom trays are made, the whitening gel is placed inside the trays and they are placed securely over the teeth for a period of time, after which they can be removed and cleaned.

Patients that utilize both in-office and at-home bleaching report a change anywhere from 12-15 shades lighter than when they started the process. At-home systems can be very successful, but may take longer to achieve the desired results. When monitored by a dentist, teeth whitening systems are considered extremely safe, and effective.
